Onwubiko Emmanuel Chidiadi

Abstract

We are in era which has been transformed by the emergence of information and communication technologies (ICTs) with information growing exponentially. This transformation further made information dissemination and accessibility very easy more so through the new media technologies. New media technologies often referred to as Web 2.0- encompass a wide variety of web-related communication technologies, such as blogs, wikis, online social networking, virtual worlds and other social media forms. This study therefore is a survey on the roles of librarians in the fight against Information Misuse in this Period of new media technologies with special reference to Nigeria. The study applied descriptive design with a sampled population of 420 librarians purposively selected among registered librarians in Nigeria. A modified Likert scale four point structured questionnaire was the main instrument used for data collections while mode and percentage were used to analyze the data collected and presented in tables. The study discovered among other things that politicians and individual social media users are most culpable of information misuse in Nigeria while new media such as Twitter; Instagram, Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger are being used to peddle misinformation with enormous negative effects on the society, It was further ascertained that librarians as information managers have prominent role to play in the fight against this anti-societal activity in Nigeria and by extension the world.
