Nonlinear analysis of Lateral Bearing Capacity of Super-long Pile by Considering the P-?Effect

Huacong Zhou, Wenjuan Yao

Abstract

According to the variation principle, this paper calculated the P-? effect of super-long pile under the combined effects of lateral and axial loads, and obtained the modified element stiffness matrix. Faced with the large deformation problem of super-long pile under the combined effects of lateral and axial loads, the nonlinear calculation method is established based on the meshless natural element method. The correctness and rationality of the method can be verified by calculating and analyzing the example. The characteristic of the P-? effect can be obtained. Because of the P-? effect, there is a nonlinear relationship existed between the displacement response and external loads. The calculated results indicate that the P-? effect cannot be overlooked where the soil of the foundation is relatively loose and where the unsupported length of pile is relatively large.
