Prediction of Milling Force in Peripheral Milling of Curved Surface based on Oblique Cutting Simulation

Abstract


Curvature variation may induce great variation of milling force. In order to predict the milling force in peripheral milling of curved surface with variable curvature efficiently, equivalent feed per tooth, entry angle, angular position of cutter and machine time are analyzed. Then, an instantaneous milling force model is proposed. Oblique cuttings with different cutting depths are simulated using a three dimensional finite element model, and instantaneous cutting force coefficients are calibrated with the simulation results. Instantaneous milling forces for the whole procedure are predicted. And a milling test is carried out. The predicted milling forces and measured milling forces have a good agreement both in variation tendency and magnitude, which shows that the presented method is efficient. Further, effects of curvature on milling forces are analyzed.
