A Terrain Generation Method for Interactive Sketch

Wang Hu, Beiji Zou, Shenghui Liao

Abstract

Existing procedural methods for generation of terrain are often complex and unintuitive to use. To solve these problems, we present a sketching interface to procedural terrain generation. This system enables users to draw the silhouette map, spine map and slope map. We propose an algorithm designed to reconstruct Digital Elevation Model (DEM) from the sketch map. Some control parameters adjust the details of synthesized terrain. Terrain is interactively generated to match the sketched constraints. Experiments show that terrains are generated efficiently; users can interactively create complex landforms.

Keywords

terrain generation; sketch map; Digital Elevation Model.
