Inverse model to adjust some parameters associated to a diffusive geologic process

Saiida Lazaar, Moulay Rchid Sidi Ammi, Dominique Guerillot

Abstract

Inverse modelling has become a standard technique for estimating geological parameters. These parameters are usually inferred by minimizing the sum of the squared differences between observed system state and the one calculated by a mathematical model. Here, we are concerned with the parameter identification problem in the context of geologic stratigraphic modelling. We apply an inverse model inspired from queuing theory based on optimization techniques to minimize the difference between model predictions and observations, our inverse model is built on the technique of the adjoint method. To illustrate this study, the paper involves numerical results demonstrating the feasibility of an automatic identification of some parameters related to the governing partial differential equations that describe a diffusive geological model.
