Sufficient, Closed-loop Agricultural Production in a Degrowth Economy

Kealan Gell

Abstract

In the case that a community would choose to abandon the traditional economic growth model in favor of degrowth with the goal of completely sustainable well-being for the community's population, a transition would have to be made away from the use of non-renewable resources. Agricultural techniques and yields are evaluated for facilitating a rapid transition away from the further extraction of finite, subsurface, fossil and mineral resources. Quantities of biomass are related to an adequate standard of living and basic material needs of a population. Per capita consumption is related to population density, assuming an optimistic and constant agricultural yield.

Keywords

degrowth, agriculture, sufficiency, biomass extraction, population.
