A Bandwidth Request Algorithm Based on Chaotic Prediction Model for Broadband Multimedia Satellite Networks

Houtian Wang, Qi Zhang, Xiangjun Xin, Yongjun Wang

Abstract

The bandwidth-on-demand (BoD) access mechanism plays a key role in broadband multimedia satellite systems in order to optimize bandwidth utilization. Two algorithms intervene in this mechanism, namely the bandwidth allocation algorithm and bandwidth request algorithm. This article deals with the problem of the design of a bandwidth request algorithm for a satellite access network using a chaotic prediction model. The objective is to guarantee a target Quality of Service (QoS) to internet traffic. For comparing the performance of different schemes, OPNET software is used to build a simulation system. Simulation results show that the chaotic prediction model proposed in this paper can timely predict the burstiness of self-similar traffic and improve the network performance.
