Two-step Cooperative Spectrum Sensing Algorithm Based on Soft and Hard Combination for Cognitive Radio

Huiheng Liu, Wei Chen

Abstract

In this paper, we propose a two-step cooperative spectrum sensing algorithm based on soft and hard combination for cognitive radio. First step is hard combination. Each Secondary User (SU) makes local decision using energy detection and sends one bit result, “1” or “0”, to the Fusion Center (FC). If any of the SUs reports the PU is present, final decision that the PU is active is declared by the FC. Otherwise, the FC will require all SUs to send their observation data to it. Then the algorithm goes into the second step, namely, soft combination. In this case, the FC makes another decision according to the detection algorithm based on Combination of Maximum and Minimum Eigenvalues (CMME). Our two-step scheme is combined to the hard and soft combination and achieves a good tradeoff between detection performance and complexity. We derive analysis and conduct simulation for comparison with CMME method and conventional OR rule method.
