Computer Simulations of Coastal Dynamics for Design of Breakwater Layout

Computer simulation of coastal dynamics provides very useful tool for designing the layout of breakwater to ascertain the feasibility of the port development. Most of the coastal phenomena such as wave propagation, tidal hydrodynamics, sediment transport etc., which are important for designing the port layout, can be simulated using mathematical models. The simulations using mathematical models guide the designer in assessing the environmental impact, morphological changes, tidal circulations and wave tranquility etc., which help in arriving at the most economical and technically feasible layout. The paper discusses theoretical background and application of mathematical models with the help of a case study.
