A Fuzzy Based Ranking of Dominance among Water Quality Parameters for Modeling: A Case Study

K.S. Ravichandran, T. Rajaram, Ashutosh Das

Abstract

In any situation of mass gathering for festivals, it becomes imperative to maintain the water quality from a public health point of view. However, as the influx of pilgrims show a wide variation, which in turn affects the water quality parameters, finding and controlling the dominant parameter responsible for overall quality, is a challenging task. This paper proposes a methodology of ranking the dominance among water quality parameters varying due to influence of mass bathing in an enclosed tank. This methodology uses fuzzy logic to take into account the wide variation shown by the parameters and expert judgment to arrive at the final ranking of dominance among the various variables in a system. The method of fuzzy weighted similar choice method is explained step-wise as applied to a real problem of ranking the variables in the water quality data collected from the Mahamaham Tank during Mahamaham festival 2004 (Southern Kumbha Mela, held once in 12 years) at Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu during which around 2.8 million devotees took their holy dip. The output from this method in terms of ranking and degree of dominance among the variables can be used for further development of a suitable model.
