Vulnerability of Indian Coastal Agri- Ecosystem – An Approach by Vulnerability Index Assessment

The impact of cyclone, flood and drought disasters on agriculture in Nagapattinam district has become a subject of increasing importance and the present study aims to expose the effect of cyclone, flood and drought disasters and its vulnerability on agriculture in Nagapattinam district. In this paper we assess the vulnerability of coastal farmers of Nagapattinam district to natural disasters and identify policy options to strengthen their adaptive capacity. In general, the socio-economic conditions of the small farmers in the study area were found to be poor and this is risky mainly during the disaster period. The foremost alternative for the coastal farmers in all the disaster-prone regions was government relief funds and insurance. This paper aims to study the vulnerability of the coastal farmers to disasters.
