Cancer of the Cervix in Nigeria: A Bio-economic Analysis

Seun Olatunbunsun, Jean M. Tchuenche

Abstract

We describe the continuous patter of cancer of the cervix in Nigeria using simple time series analysis. The data is analyzed over a period of 10 years and it is observed that patients’ age has more to do with the incidence of cervical cancer than the year or time of occurrence. It is observed that women in the age brackets 40-49 have the highest incidence, and this incidence is on the increase yearly. The trend analysis reveals that women in the age group 40-69 be unconditionally screened, educated early enough on the dangers of this disease, and be advised to go for regular voluntary screening as from the age of 30, suggesting that a cost effective sustainable cervical screening programs from this age group will greatly enhance prevention.
