Efficiency, Irrigation Waste and Agrochemical Pollution from Soybean Farming in East Java, Indonesia: Ex-Post Impact Assessment of IPM Technology

Joko Mariyono

Abstract

Water resource is used hugely in agricultural sector. The objective of this study is to (1) evaluate technical efficiency (2) estimate the rate of irrigation waste and agrochemical pollution resulting from technically inefficient production of soybean. A particular attention is paid to impact of integrated pest management (IPM) technology. The study was conducted in three districts of East Java, where soybean was cultivated intensively. A theory of economic production was used in this study. Data were colleted from randomly selected farmers cultivating soybean. The results show that soybean farming was not technically efficient, meaning that farmers were not capable of producing a given level of output with the potentially minimum level of inputs. Consequently, there was irrigation waste and agrochemical pollution. More than 95% of the water and agrochemical inputs were wastefully discharged into the environment. In order to reduce irrigation waste and agrochemical pollution, IPM technology was one of the sensible alternatives, because it enhanced efficiency leading to reductions in irrigation waste and agrochemical pollution.
