An Economic Analysis of Production Efficiency and Marketing Efficiency of Poultry Enterprise: A Case Study

J.S. Amarnath, C. Saranya

Abstract

The study was conducted in Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu state to analyze the production and marketing of layer poultry. The study revealed that the variable cost accounted for about 96.70 percent of the total cost incurred and expenditure on feed was the major component of variable cost. Sale of eggs occupied a major proportion of returns from egg production in layer farms. The high marketable surplus of 98.98 per cent was observed in poultry layer farms. The production efficiency measures revealed that poultry enterprise was profitable in all the farms. The seasonal variation in egg prices were characterized by two rises and two dips in a year. The Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) for egg price from ARIMA models was 6.64 which indicated that the forecasting inaccuracy is low. Marketing Channel II (Producer-retailer –consumer) was the most efficient marketing channel. The most widely reported problem in marketing was the seasonal fluctuations in prices.
