A study on perceptions of forestry development in Argentina

Eloisa Mussat, Pablo Laclau

Abstract

Through a survey carried on in Northwestern Patagonia, Argentina, the position of different actors in relation to forestry development has been considered. Three forest local cases have been selected to assess the actor’s perception of the forestry development in terms of benefits and impacts. The chosen perspective considers various types of perceived impacts that are not usually taken in account by projects or policies. By adopting some concepts of the position analysis (PA) we identified several causes of the actor’s negative or positive views. The survey also inquired about the sources of information, participation, association and references considered by the actors in a decision-making process, attempting to show the degree of discussion and the expression of their interests and views. The results contribute to a better understanding of the regional forestry debate and emphasizel the importance to apply multistakeholder cooperation in future public projects and policies.
